The relevant role being played by the IIMC in the field of communication studies, a need was felt to expand the reach of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in the country by opening Regional Centres. The first Regional Centre was set up in the east at the Dhenkanal in 1994. Hon’ble Minister of Information and Broadcasting announced in September 2009 that four new Regional Centres will be opened in J&K in the North, Kerala in the South, Maharashtra (Vidarbha region) in the West and Mizoram in the North-East. For this, a new scheme was included in the Media Infrastructure Development Programme under the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17). Locations of these Regional Centres were finalised keeping in mind that remote and backward regions are given ample representation. The four Regional Centres were set up in Jammu, Kottayam, Amravati and Aizawl.
