The North Eastern Regional Campus of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) started functioning on August 8, 2011, from a rented accommodation provided by the Mizoram University in Aizawl, the capital city of the state. The present permanent campus was inaugurated by the Hon’ble President of Bharat Smt. Draupadi Murmu on November 3, 2022. Eight-acre land for the present campus was acquired by the IIMC through an MoU with Mizoram University. Today, the Regional Campus stands on its own with a large academic building with a studio, auditorium, library, hostel and staff quarters. Unlimited power backup, water supply and mess facility are available on the campus. However, expansion activities are going on for constructing a new hostel, staff quarters and other facilities in the Campus.
Initially, the Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (English) course was introduced in the Campus in 2011. And, in 2022, a new course, Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Media (DM), has also been started. Like other PGD courses offered by the IIMC, both these courses are of one year duration divided into two semesters. Now, in 2025 PGD in DM has been upgraded into Master of Arts in the New Media Communications (NMC). Presently, there are 30 seats in English Journalism and 30 seats in NMC.
The campus leaves no stone unturned to ensure all required facilities for all round development of the students, be it academic, sports or cultural activities. The scenic and tranquil campus provides a perfect atmosphere for studies. The city of Aizawl houses various sister organisations of IIMC under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting including the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Doordarshan, All India Radio, etc., which are available for hands-on experience for the IIMC students.
