India's media industry has been witnessing a boom in the
past two decades, In view of the growing demand for trained
media personnel across the country, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication
decided to open more regional centres at various places.
While the IIMC Regional Centre at Dhenkanal in Orissa has been
operating successfully since 1993, two new regional centres opened this
year at Amravati in Vidharbha region of Maharashtra and in MIzoram's capital Aizawl. Two
more new regional centres
are on the anvil.
Selection of students for both New Delhi and the other campuses is done
through a common entrance examination. Students are assigned to the
respective campuses based on merit cum choice criteria.
Dhenkanal
It was inaugurated on August 14th,1993
Spread over a sprawling picturesque campus, the Institute conducts PG Diploma
courses in Journalism in English and Oriya, besides short term courses and
workshops. Hostel facilities are available for both boys and girls.
Amravati
It was inaugurated on August 8th,2011
Though there were plenty of engineering, medical and management colleges in
Central India, the absence of a quality media institute was always being felt.
The IIMC opened its regional centre in Amravati in the Vidharbha region of
Maharashtra to fill up this
vaccuum. The campus is presently located in the Sant Gadge Baba Amravati
University and is equipped with all modern facilities and a well-stocked
library.
Aizawl
It was inaugurated on August 8th,2011
Despite a proliferation of newspapers and televlsion channels in the
Northeast, there was hardly any centre for media training facilities
in the region. The IIMC's new regional centre at Aizawl aims to bridge this gap
by training media professionals who could contribute to this ever
burgeoning sector. The Institute is housed within the Aizawl
University campus and runs only the Journalism (English) course at
present.
